Knee Play and Clown Class

A course to create SHORT PLAYS inspired by a word, and as quirky as a knee & Cavort about in the first stages of CLOWN work

The Knee Play Lab

A two week course to create short plays, no longer than 10 minutes, inspired by a word, and as quirky as a knee.

Leah Cherniak and Martha Ross of THEATRE COLUMBUS invite you to participate in a unique project -- The Knee Play Lab. This is how it works.

Between 10 – 12 participants interested in an opportunity to create new work come together for 2 weeks in June. With guidance, exercises and dramaturgical support the group will create 6 short plays, no longer than 10 minutes each. They will be presented at the end of the 2 weeks for an informal public gathering.

Everyone involved will be responsible for the creation of one of the 10 minute plays and everyone involved will likely participate as a performer. All the pieces will be inspired and anchored by the word FEAR.

We will begin as a group, investigating FEAR. We will use exercises to inspire and inform; exercises that are based in the physical or the imaginative. Then the plays start to take shape with one or more of the participating artists taking charge of each 10 minute play. The two weeks then pass into the delightful chaos of creation. We are approaching this as a lab, where exploring collaborative creation is the primary focus. We will encourage a process that is dynamic, lively, intelligent and personal.

This is a short introductory workshop into the world of clown. With a red nose, a hat, a pair of shoes and maybe a suitcase, you will cavort about in the first stages of clown work. You will be able to dip your toe into it and imagine where you could go. For those who have done a class in clown, revisiting the first exercises may reveal something new about you and clown.

You can look forward to being vulnerable, available, inventive and maybe even funny.
