About Theatre Columbus
Leah Cherniak and Martha Ross founded Theatre Columbus in 1983, having met while studying at Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, the renowned school of movement and clown.
Since returning to Canada, they have continued to create and produce comedies that describe the human condition. Their investigations explore the relationships between laughter and pathos, in what have been called "serious comedies", with such subjects as love, anger, paranoia and betrayal.
Their method of creating is unique in that they emphasise the dynamics and performance of the actors involved, so that the plays are frequently created as collectives. Though primarily known for their original comedies, they have been inspired by the classics, producing inventive adaptations of Twelfth Night, The Barber of Seville and Peer Gynt.
